Artisan foods, regional specialties and more in new shops, eateries
BOSTON, May 7, 2014 / PRNewswire / — Travelers are not only enjoying modern conveniences in the new terminal B connector at Boston Logan International Airport, they’re discovering a shopping and dining destination like no other. AIRMALL® Boston, the developer of the retail concessions program, has fashioned a splendid array of shops and eateries in United Airlines’ new connector. From local legends to farm house originals, the colorful additions showcase the bounty of the region.
“We are ushering in a new era in retail at Logan airport,” says Michael Caro, vice president of AIRMALL Boston. “United’s new connector represents an investment in the future of the airport and our region as a top destination for leisure and business travel. Since 2000, our focus has been improving the retail experience in terminals B and E as part of the modernization program,” he says. “Today, we’re shining the spotlight on the region with exciting concepts like Berkshire Farms Market and Stephanie’s, as well as national brands, to delight passengers.”
Upwards of $3.7 million was invested in the construction of new retail units, which add 5,000 square feet of concessions space in terminal B. All construction work was performed by local contractors. The new concessions also bring 138 more jobs to the airport. “It’s a proud day for our tenants, our partners at Massport, and our team,” Mr. Caro adds. “We’re honored to welcome more local concepts and beloved brands to Logan.”
Passenger response has exceeded expectations. For the first time in terminal B, American and US Airways operations are connected beyond security allowing customers to access their gates, existing concessions as well as the new shops and amenities, without going back through a security checkpoint. Seven new shops add to the collection of 35 restaurants and bars, 20 specialty retail units, 13 news and gift stores, and services at the AIRMALL:
- Berkshire Farms Market brings artisan food purveyors from in and around the Berkshires to offer travelers delectable takeaways like Berkshire Bark, Bola Granola, Cookiehead, Cricket Creek Farm and Fire Cider. More than a dozen regional brands are represented.
- Legal Sea Foods features a long list of traditional sea fare: oysters, clams, crab and other favorites from Boston’s waters. Legal Sea Foods has been serving Bostonians since 1950.
- Peet’s Coffee & Tea is a premier specialty coffee and tea company recognized as the grandfather of specialty coffee in the United States. Peet’s offers superior coffees and teas by sourcing the best quality beans and leaves in the world. This is a first for Boston Logan, and Peet’s joins seven other unique coffee operators available in the terminal.
- Stephanie’s has been an institution in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay, offering hearty meals in cozy banquettes and street-side tables. Now, the same sophisticated comfort food is available at BOS in a modern setting. The new restaurant is a must see and taste.
- Be Relax offers travelers a unique spa experience, with a complete line of beauty and well-being services such as massages, facials, manicures and oxygen aromatherapy.
- Boston America! has gear to show your Boston pride, including gifts and merchandise supporting the Patriots, Red Sox and Bruins.
- Hudson carries travel essentials: magazines, health and beauty aids, snacks and beverages, souvenirs, and exclusive gifts from New England’s foremost attractions.
AIRMALL Boston marked the opening of the new connector with a farmers’ market at Berkshire Farms Market, featuring artisan fare from regional farms and food purveyors. The celebration continues with a sweepstakes awarding a getaway for two to the Berkshires. The three-day package includes a stay at Cranwell Resort, Spa and Golf Club and a trip to Lenox Farmers’ Market. To enter the sweepstakes, passengers may submit an entry form in the terminal. The promotion runs through May 31, 2014.
Since 2000, AIRMALL Boston has led the development of the retail concessions program for Boston Logan International Airport terminals B and E. A focus on brands, local owners, competition and street pricing has led to a doubling of sales and space over that period. Additionally, the AIRMALL strategy has tripled the number of locally based owners operating at Logan, while doubling the number of different operators participating in the program. Local flavor is ever-present. It started with Legal Sea Foods, a Boston original; the innovative Dine Boston concept, a dining experience that brings dishes from the best chefs in the city to the airport; and now Berkshire Farms Market and Stephanie’s.
